Why we keep the layer lines on our lamps

|

Every Moodest9 lamp shows fine lines across its surface. They are layer lines: the marks a 3D printer leaves as it builds an object one thin layer at a time. We do not sand them, coat them or paint over them. We leave them on purpose, and this article explains why.

What are layer lines?

Our printers melt plastic filament and lay it down in thin layers, one on top of the other, until the lamp is complete. Where one layer meets the next, it leaves a faint ridge. On a finished lamp these ridges read as a fine, regular texture.

Why don't we remove them?

"I keep the layer lines because they are part of the design, and because I want people to see that the lamp was made with a 3D printer."
- Dominik Bondićov, founder and designer

Many 3D-printed products are sanded, filled and painted until they look as if they came out of a mould. That hides how the object was made. We do the opposite. Our lamps are not post-processed: they go into the box as they come off the printer.

What do the lines look like when the lamp is on?

Our lamps are printed with translucent walls, so the light passes through the material. When the lamp is on, the layer lines stay visible in the glow as a fine texture.

Are layer lines a defect?

No. The lines are on every lamp we make. If your lamp arrives damaged, that is a different matter: send photos and your order number to orders@moodest9.design and we will sort it out.

How do I clean a lamp with layer lines?

Unplug the lamp first. Wipe it with a lightly damp cloth. For a stubborn mark, use a little soap.
